Using genetic modification, yeast can be made to produce numerous molecules including cannabinoids. This is promising technology for cannabinoid production on an industrial level. Check out this article in Wired magazine. As with any biosynthesis, the problem is not whether or not you can force an unrelated biological system to product molecules. The problem lies in creating an appropriate growing environment on a massive scale, and then extracting and processing those molecules on the same scale in either a batch or continuous process, which becomes a chemical engineering problem. So for the foreseeable future, we will continue to see cannabinoids produced by cannabis plants, but this is definitely something for industry players to keep an eye on because it could be a complete game-changer if done effectively.
